Organisations and their people can only truly learn when there is an environment created and led by managers that tolerates failure without punishment. As Edgar Schein notes, there will always be “learning anxiety”, but if the employee accepts the need to learn, then the process can be greatly facilitated by good training, coaching, group support, feedback, and positive incentives.

To the extent that our dreams have not been realised, we will increasingly live in a 3-D world. We may have faced constant disappointment. Small disappointments can have powerful, cumulative effects. Each day we’ve been told by our boss that we’ve not got what it takes to win at work will have the impact of a single axe blow to the bough of a tree. While each may take away only a small chip, the cumulative effect of the blows will be to bring the tree down. The result may be feelings of powerlessness, of lack of control, and of perpetual disappointment. For each job application we’ve had turned down, or each medical examination that doesn’t bring the results we’d hoped, the impact will be the same. Frustration, disappointment, and the sneaking feeling that we’re not quite who we thought we were. Continue reading

I’ve been reading Get the Job You Really Want, a new book by UK entrepreneur and Dragons’ Den TV star James Caan, and I particularly like his chapter about the importance of passion in business. If I had to summarise his view, it would be that having passion may not completely alter your luck or work magic, however it can, at the very least, keep you moving forwards and help to optimise your chance of getting the job (or life) that you want. In other words, passion is often a “necessary condition” for doing well, but it is not a “sufficient condition”. Having a bit of luck along the way or being in the right place at the right time may also be required.
