Units of Study

To complete the Diploma of Business Administration (Administration and Executive Assistant Program) you will undertake 8 units (less if you receive RPL for any previous studies). These units have a strong focus on the core tasks of administrators as well as providing opportunities for learning and skill development in some of the core tasks of managers and executives.

Manage Meetings

(BSBADM502B)

While meetings are essential as part of the communication and decision-making systems of almost every organisation, they can be an endless source of frustration if not organised and managed effectively. This unit emphasises the importance of a clear agenda, high-quality supporting documentation, communication skills, and effective leadership if meetings are to achieve their purposes and goals.

Plan or Review Administrative Systems

(BSBADM504B)

The productivity and effectiveness of organisations depends on the creation of user-focused and efficient administrative systems. Such systems may be used for a variety of purposes, from communicating important information throughout the organisation to ensuring that all employees are paid the correct salary at the right time. They may be in either electronic or paper-based formats. Providing the skills to evaluate existing administrative systems and plan improvements or the creation of entirely new systems are core elements of this unit.

Manage Programs that Promote Personal Effectiveness

- (BSBLED502A)

The best employers focus on the health and wellbeing of their people. They understand that a healthy, satisfied workforce is critical to achieving the organisation’s goals. They gather the right information to guide the creation and implementation of strategies for employee wellbeing. Such strategies may include healthy food offerings, fitness and physical training programs and facilities, and attention to the costs of workplace stress. In this unit, learners are encouraged to understand the potential benefits of such programs and, more importantly, learn how to implement them appropriately and effectively.

Manage Workforce Planning

- (BSBADM504B)

Effective workforce planning ensures that the organisation has the right people in the right jobs at the right time. Taking as it's starting point the organisation's goals and people strategies, managers must create action plans that match people with jobs in terms of the number and type of positions to be filled and the abilities, knowledge, skills and qualifications of the people who may fill them. Workforce planning links to other HR processes such as job analysis and design, recruitment and selection, performance management, training and development, and employee relations strategies.

Manage Operational Plan

- (BSBMGT515A)

An organisation’s strategic or business plan needs to be translated into operational plans that ensure that the work of individuals and teams is consistent with the organisation’s primary goals. In developing operational plans, managers need to consult widely, create Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and put in place the systems required to achieve the goals of their operational plans. Human resources and similar strategies will need to be effectively implemented to achieve the requirements of operational plans. Systems to monitor and review progress will need to be created. Together, these tasks will assist the organisation to achieve its goals.

Manage Projects

(BSBPMG510A)

Many organisational tasks are undertaken as projects. The design of new products or services, the creation of new systems, policies, and procedures, and the implementation of new technologies are all examples of tasks that require project management skills. In this unit, the project management process will be explained and project plans and tools described. The need for consultation in the project management process is emphasised, as is the importance of risk management and budgeting to this process.

Manage People Performance

(BSBMGT502B)

Managers need to ensure that their people know what is expected of them, that they receive regular feedback on their progress towards goals, and that they are constantly supported in their efforts to achieve peak performance. Designing an appropriate performance management system for employees, getting their buy-in to its goals, and learning how to coach and counsel staff to achieve high performance are key elements of this unit.

Manage Personal Work Priorities and Professional Development

(BSBWOR501B)

As powerful role models whose behaviour is constantly observed by others in the workplace, managers need to ensure that they possess sound skills in self-management and self-organisation. The ability to prioritise their work, use technology effectively to manage their commitments, and seek feedback from others are at the core of these skills, as is the willingness to pursue opportunities for further learning and development. This unit considers how managers can build these critical skills.
