Units of Study

To complete the diploma of management in Australia, you will undertake 8 units (or fewer if you receive Recognition of Prior Learning).

These have been chosen to provide learners with a broad and comprehensive overview of the key competencies of managers.

Course Units

Manage Projects

- (BSBPMG510A)

Many organisational tasks are undertaken as projects. The design of new products or services, the creation of new systems, policies, and procedures, and the implementation of new technologies are all examples of tasks that require project management skills. In this unit, the project management process will be explained and project plans and tools described. The need for consultation in the project management process is emphasised, as is the importance of risk management and budgeting to this process.

Ensure Team Effectiveness

- (BSBWOR502A)

Virtually all employees are members of workplace teams. Even senior executives will be members of top management teams or boards of directors. Having both the ability to serve as an effective team member and the leadership skills required to form, develop and nurture organisational teams are among the most important skills for any manager. In this unit, learners will have the opportunity to lead their own team in a workplace task or, if not currently in the workplace, in a team-based task within their local community.

Manage People Performance

- (BSBMGT502B)

Managers need to ensure that their people know what is expected of them, that they receive regular feedback on their progress towards goals, and that they are constantly supported in their efforts to achieve peak performance. Designing an appropriate performance management system for employees, getting their buy-in to its goals, and learning how to coach and counsel staff to achieve high performance are key elements of this unit.

Manage Operational Plan

- (BSBMGT515A)

An organisation’s strategic or business plan needs to be translated into operational plans that ensure that the work of individuals and teams is consistent with the organisation’s primary goals. In developing operational plans, managers need to consult widely, create Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and put in place the systems required to achieve the goals of their operational plans. Human resources and similar strategies will need to be effectively implemented to achieve the requirements of operational plans. Systems to monitor and review progress will need to be created. Together, these tasks will assist the organisation to achieve its goals.

Recruit, Select and Induct Staff

- (BSBHRM402A)

In this unit, you will learn about the key tasks associated with recruiting, selecting and inducting the right people for the jobs in any organisation. These tasks include creating job descriptions, organising and administering the recruitment and selection process, and establishing an effective induction process for new staff.

Manage Performance Management Systems

- (BSBHRM503A)

Individual and team performance review, evaluation, and response are best considered as part of a broader system of performance management. This unit builds on the earlier unit Manage People Performance to focus in greater detail on the various options managers have for assessing staff performance and the specific interventions that may be required in effectively managing underperformance and misconduct in the workplace.

Manage Quality Customer Service

- (BSBCUS501A)

Whatever the organisation, effectively meeting the needs of its customers and clients will be a key objective. This unit assists managers to understand customer needs, develop and implement the processes required to meet them, and establish systems to constantly monitor progress towards achieving the highest standards of customer service.

Manage Personal Work Priorities and Professional Development

- (BSBWOR501B)

As powerful role models whose behaviour is constantly observed by others in the workplace, managers need to ensure that they possess sound skills in self-management and self-organisation. The ability to prioritise their work, use technology effectively to manage their commitments, and seek feedback from others are at the core of these skills, as is the willingness to pursue opportunities for further learning and development. This unit in diploma of management in Australia course considers how managers can build these critical skills.
